Communication Disability In Seizure Disorder

Seizure Disorder is commonly called as ‘Epilepsy’. It is a long-lasting (chronic) brain-related (neurological) disorder in which repeated seizures are formed without any cause. Seizures are signs or symptoms of abnormal neuronal (neurons are the basic unit of Brain) activity in the brain which lives for a very short time. Epilepsy or Seizure Disorder is treated under medical professionals like – Neurologists and Neurosurgeons.

Symptoms that cause Communication Disability in Patients:

  • Generally, facial muscles are affected which do not allow proper speaking.
  • Speaking in patients is also interrupted by frequent drooling.
  • Vocalizations like- shouting, crying or moaning are common.
  • Subtle chewing habit cause attention related problems.
  • Reading disability is also seen in few.

The following treatments may be opted to treat Seizures:

Anticonvulsant:
Anticonvulsants are used life long as medication to treatment of Seizure Disorder or Epilepsy. But these can have major side effects.
20 medications have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) like- Tegretol, Tranxene, Klonopin, Zarontin, Felbatol, Cerebyx, Neurontin, Vimpat, Lamictal, Keppra, Trileptal, Luminal, Dilantin, Lyrica, Mysoline, Gabitril, Topamax, Depakote, Depakene and Zonegran

Surgery To Treat Seizure Disorder:
Surgery is prescribed for those whose seizures do not react properly to Anticonvulsant medication. The location of the seizure is needed to be located and removed by surgery. Effect of surgery on brain needs to be determined.
The technique of Palliative surgery can reduce the occurrence and severity of seizures in some cases.
Another technique called Hemispherectomy removes most of the cerebrum or in cases half of it.

Ketogenic Diet
A diet having high levels of fat but low carbohydrate are prescribed for the sufferers.

Electrical Stimulation
A digital device called Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is implanted inside the pateint to function properly.

Responsive Neurostimulator System (RNS)
A computerized electrical device is implanted in the skull. It delivers electric shocks to cut-off the seizure.

Noninvasive Surgery
The ‘Gamma Knife’ or other radioactive agents are used to cut off the seizures.

Avoidance Therapy
The factors that helps in seizure formation need to be found and degraded.
