How to Assess Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is more common with children in which 5% of them are elementary school students. It is a language based learning disorder. Dyslexia is a condition where a person finds it difficult to read and articulate different language skills.

How to Assess Dyslexia?

  • First and foremost, you must have an understanding on the causes of dyslexia. It is caused due to the damage or dysfunction of the left side of the brain. This is a condition where the brain fails to interpret the correct meaning of written images which are received from the eyes. Dyslexia patients are usually visual thinkers and do well in many subjects. Sometime a psychological assessment can help you to know if your child’s dyslexia is caused due to social problems like depression, anxiety etc.
  • You must try to identify all the signs and symptoms of dyslexia. They are: difficulty in interpreting written and spoken languages, difficulty in some specific language skills like reading.
  • You should also look for some early warning signs like delayed speech like a child not able to speak words by the time of his first birthday.
  • You must immediately opt for a treatment. Most of the time teachers use a lot of techniques to develop a child’s ability to talk, hear, see and touch to improve their reading skills.
  • You should also keep in mind that dyslexia patient are visual thinkers and multi-dimensional thinkers. They try to think in pictures.
