Autism Supplements-The Importance of Nutrients in Brain Function
Not usually, is nutrition part of any standard diagnostic procedures while trying to assess the symptoms of autism. Autism supplements are only a recent introduction for improving the quality of brain function and its development in people who suffer from autism and its related disorders.
Importance of Autism Supplements: Nutrition might not be completely related to the development of autism spectrum disorders. But, it is very much important for helping the brain stay fit and healthy along with all other organs. Let us look at some of the recent developments with regards to autism and nutrition.
Role of Fatty Acids in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Of late, the role of fatty acids (like omega-3 and omega-6) in patients suffering from disorders of autism spectrum (dyspraxia, dyslexia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
Micronutients like omega-3 and omega-6 play a huge role in optimising the performance of the brain. According to many researches and studies, these highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) are either deficient or imbalanced in patients suffering from autism related disorders.
This imbalance or deficiency of these unsaturated fatty acids can lead to the development or predisposition of disorders like dyspraxia, dyslexia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. As a matter of fact, these disorders are linked to each other.
Role of HUFA: Many researches have provided an insight about the role these unsaturated fatty acids play in the functioning of the brain and the eye. As far as the functioning of these two is concerned, it is these acids and not the usual fatty acids that are important.
As a matter of fact, 30 percent of the retina and 20 percent of the brain’s dry weight are made up of these very important nutrients.
Hence, it is necessary that these nutrients are provided sufficiently so that memory, vision, concentration and other motor activities in them are improved.
Supplements: Omax3 and MorEPA are two omega-3 enriched oils which can be taken everyday and can provide 500 mg of the required nutrient.
L-Carnosine can improve behaviour and language in autistic people.
Apart from the above two, Vitamins A, C and B6 and gluten and yeast free diet are also recommendations of the National Autism Society.
The above mentioned autism supplements would be useful in supplying the essential nutrients to the brain which autistic people could be lacking.
