Your SLP will observe how many speech disfluencies do you have in different situations. Even he/she will notice the different types of disfluencies. Also, how you cope up with these disfluencies will be assessed by the SLP. The way you react to factors like teasing which enhance the problem are also analysed. Your SLP may even conduct various other assessments, like language skills and speech rate. These factors depend on the history and age of the patient.

After considering all these events and data, your SLP will determine whether you have a speech and fluency disorder. A good and effective diagnosis is imperative to determine which treatment is most suitable for you.

Treatments for Stammering

The mode of treatment is mainly aimed at teaching the patient behaviors, strategies and skill which will help him/her in oral communication. These treatments may include:

  • Fluency Shaping Therapy

This mode of treatment include monitoring and controlling the speech rate. You may have to practice fluent, smooth speech at a slow speed, using short phrases and sentences. Also, control on breathing is taught to the patient. he/she should learn how to regulate breathing while practicing speech.

  • Stammering Modification Therapy

The focus in this treatment is to modify the stammering. Hence, it requires less effort and is much easier to speak, rather than completely eliminating stammering. The goal is to reduce the fear and anxiety, which exacerbates stammering.

  • Electronic Fluency Devices

This treatment has helped some patients, but it does not work effectively for all. The affected people hear their own voice differently. The altered auditory feedback is done byb speaking with another person in unison.
