What Is Dyspraxia? Its Causes And Symptoms

In a class of 30 students we find at least one student with difficulties in learning, speaking, writing, and performing other simple or complex motor skills. A simple answer to the question What Is Dyspraxia is, it is a diminishing and impaired organization of movements to perform a task. Daily activities are like big milestones to the adults and kids who suffer from minimal brain dysfunction. It is believed that this brain condition could be due to some under performing neurons.

What Is Dyspraxia?

Also, known as Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD), Clumsy Child Syndrome, Minimal Brain Dysfunction, Motor Learning Difficulty, Perceptuo-Motor Dysfunction, dyspraxia is a condition where a child finds it difficult to carry out a series of organized movements to finish a given task. This condition could also be associated with problems of cognitive abilities like thinking, reasoning, language and perception.

In simple words it is a life long disorder of the development of motor skills that are needed to perform as simple a task as operating a knife or fork to a complex skill like writing.

Causes Of The Motor Learning Difficulty:
Though the main reason in most of the cases has not been identified so far, some researches have suggested that it could be possibly due to the underdevelopment of certain cells called neurons of the nervous system. Unlike other speech therapy problems this situation is not associated with damage or injury to the brain.

Symptoms Of Developmental Co-ordination Disorder As A Toddler:

  • A toddler takes more than the usual time to learn to roll, sit without help, stand, walk and speak.
  • Generally the early symptoms are that the kid skips crawling.
  • Even when walking, a child falls more frequently than his or her peers.
  • Has difficulty climbing up and walking down the stairs.
  • A child may not be as active as his age group kids are. He may not find it easy to kick a ball as hard a child of his age group should.
  • He may not jump, hop, skip, catch, or run like his peers.

Symptoms In Early Age:

  • His motor skills are poorer than they should be.
  • Avoids sports and games.
  • Is not organized.
  • As a school going child he or she finds it harder to do simple mathematics.
  • Poor attention and performance in a group, but does better when faced one-on-one.
  • Constantly moves or taps legs and arms.
  • When angry these kids are prone to bang their heads.
  • They have a problem following a routine, an organized schedule.
  • Are overtly active and find it difficult to stay in a place for more than five minutes.
  • They can get easily angry and excited.
  • These kids are prone to temper tantrums.
  • Difficulty in learning and riding a cycle.
  • Has problem with speech, and language.
  • Do not finish tasks.
  • Has no sense of balance and ground and usually bump into walls and things.

Symptoms In Adults:

  • As an adult the sufferer has difficulty in grasping things like pen, key, locks etc.
  • Bad handwriting, has problems with drawing, lacks dexterity to play musical instruments etc.
  • Speech is fast, unclear, repetitive, and high in pitch and volume.
  • Difficulty in driving, lacks adequate sense of direction, and has poor visual perception.
  • Lacks dance rhythm and the gait or walking style is clumsy.
  • Finds it difficult to dress properly.
  • They are not focused and are easily distracted.
  • Are mostly impulsive in behavior and want immediate satisfaction.
  • Can easily get worried, stressed, and depressed.
  • Have low self esteem and confidence.
  • Usually suffer from obsessive compulsive disorders and are prone to emotional outbursts.

These simple tips can help one identify and know what is dyspraxia and provide the required therapy by addressing the issue at the earliest.
