Help For Dyslexia In Children

Many children have problem reading, writing, and spelling words. They are also troubled when they have to remember and arrange things, toys, beads, letters, numbers, symbols, or anything in a sequence. This makes learning a difficult task for them. Help For Dyslexia is useful for children who find it hard to express their thoughts clearly, and perform as efficiently as other kids do. This might push children towards depression and trauma. Teachers and parents, all should understand the special needs these children have and must not ignore them.

Help For Dyslexia:
Let us understand how help can be given to these children:

  • Create a comfortable atmosphere in the class where the child is not ridiculed and is given confidence to be himself or herself.
  • It is the teacher’s responsibility to save the kid from the trauma when the child is lagging behind in learning abilities.
  • Teachers should be prepared with the knowledge of dealing with dyslexic children. This will help the kid learn better in a positive atmosphere. This will improve his or her self-confidence and self-value.
  • The short term memory is poor in these kids, and this causes trouble in remembering and retaining the lessons learned. For this the teacher should give an outline as to what will be taught in the class in the beginning and revise what has been learnt at the end of it. This will help the child better and the information will be stored in long term memory.
  • Teachers should ensure that when the home work is given, the child has the exact worksheet or notes.
  • Ask the child to note down the correct phone numbers of one or two classmates, so that he can call up and ask them in case he forgets what the home work was.
  • Help the child prepare and check the list of things to be done every evening. This will also build self-dependency and confidence.
  • Use folders, dividers, and other means to help the kid become more organized.
  • For them break the hard tasks into many simpler doable tasks.
  • If the child has problem with visual memory then give handouts and notes, instead of asking him or her to copy from the blackboard.
  • Make the child sit nearer to the teacher for any help needed.
  • Teacher should use color chalk to write on black board. The writing should be well spaced and neatly written, and should not be erased sooner. This will relax the child and he will copy everything correctly.
  • Introducing new words slowly and repeating them frequently with their meaning would help the kids learn better.
  • Let a dyslexic child know in advance to rehearse a pre-selected part to be read in the class the next day. This will give him or her the time to prepare.
  • Do not force them to read aloud in the class. This might stress them unnecessarily. You can do that as a one-on-one exercise.
  • Encourage the children to read other books too, apart from the academic course. Let them enjoy it even if they do not understand much of it. This will give them the pleasure of reading.
  • While taking spelling test prepare a short list for the dyslexic children and take a test from that list only. Introduce one or two new words each week.
  • Encourage them to look for errors in their work. Teaching how to proof read will help them improve.
  • Almost 90% of the dyslexic children have problem with some or the other branch of mathematics. They are particularly more troubled with problems that involve long steps of calculation or the ones that need short term memory. Encourage them to use calculators, cross-checking method, voicing every step of the calculation, and separating decimals with red ink etc.
  • Encourage the child to write in cursive handwriting and to be critical of their own writing. This will help them look for errors and reduce them.
  • Write a few words on the board and discuss the advantages of good handwriting. Good handwriting improves the confidence of children.

These are a few points that can provide help for dyslexia children in better reading, writing, understanding, spelling, and handwriting skills.
