Information On Dyslexia – Overview

A hereditary condition, this developmental reading disorder affects an individual’s ability to read, understand, and interpret letters, numbers, words, phrases, and language. Information On Dyslexia does not end with this part of definition. This disorder does not interfere with the intelligence quotient, the patient and the ability to think. What Is Developmental Reading Disorder?
This disorder affects a person’s ability to read, write, learn, and spell words and numbers correctly. The language learning part of the brain does not process the information accurately and these people find it hard to distinguish between different sounds, phonemes, and rhymes of distinct letters and words. It is not a case of brain injury, but a condition that runs in family.

Symptoms Of Dyslexia:
The following signs should be paid attention to identify the disorder. The earlier this is diagnosed, the better the person will react to the treatment.

  • The memory to remember numbers, letters, words etc is not proper.
  • They unintentionally skip letters or words while reading sentences.
  • Reading is very slow and is full of errors.
  • They confuse between certain letters and numbers and write them in reverse. For example they write 9 instead of 6, 64 instead of 46, or ‘god’, instead of ‘dog’ etc.
  • Their hand writing is messy, is not clear, and is difficult to read.
  • The words are poorly spaced, or too wide to read.
  • The font is either too small or too large.
  • Punctuation, rules, syntax, and difference between lower case and upper case is not followed.
  • Their spellings are full of mistakes.
  • They have a hard time understanding and doing mathematical problems.
  • Individuals with dyslexia have problem with directions and they always confuse left with right.
  • They have problem understanding and following instructions that follow more than 2 or 3 steps.
  • They have articulation problem too and their speech is slightly affected with conditions like stuttering, cluttering, or other minor disorders.
  • They are usually later talkers.
  • They have difficulty in telling the time.
  • Their concentration is easily distracted and is poor. They cannot focus for too long. They find it hard to stay on one topic or work or interest for long.
  • They are not very good with coordination of things, movements, balance, etc.
  • They suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder.
  • They have mild to severe mood swings.
  • They tend to avoid arranging and sequencing things.
  • Their self confidence is very low and they are usually fearful of many things.
  • They do not feel good about themselves and feel stupid, dull, lazy, and brainless.
  • They also complain about nausea, abdominal problems etc.

This information on dyslexia is not a detailed analysis of the condition but only brief note. Parents, teachers, and well wishers should look out for these signs and approach a psychologist or a speech therapist for the diagnosis.
