Speech Impairment In Adults: Different Types Of Speech Disorders
Speech impairment in adults may be caused by any of the several problems that make it difficult to communicate with other individuals. For example, stuttering is a type of speech disorder which affects children as well as adults. There are several alternative names for speech disorder:
- Inability to speak
- Dysarthria
- Aphasia
- Dysphonia voice dystrophy
- Slurred speech
Some common speech and language disorders which affect adults are:
Aphasia: It is loss of the ability to express and understand spoken and written language. There are many different types of aphasia. This condition does not apply to children who have never faced any communication problem. It commonly occurs following
- Traumatic brain injuries or strokes
- People suffering from degenerative diseases or brain tumors that affect the language locations in the brain
- In some cases, the problem of aphasia corrects itself eventually. But in other cases, it is an irreversible condition.
Dysarthria: The person has ongoing struggle in expressing certain words or sounds. The speed or rhythm of the speech changes completely. Also people suffering from dysarthria have poorly pronounced speech which leads to slurring. Generally, a brain or nerve disorder makes it difficult to control the vocal chords and larynx which produces speech.
People with dysarthria may have problem while swallowing. Sometimes it is confused with aphasia (difficulty in producing language). They have different causes.
Voice disturbances: If any changes occur in the shape or function of the vocal chords, it causes disturbance in your voice. It can also happen if any lumpy growths such as polyps, nodules, papillomas, cysts, cancers and granulomas form around your vocal chords. Your voice sounds different because of these changes.
